Reorganisation of Linguistic States

The demand for the re-organisation of the states on linguistic basis became very active after 1947. So in 1948 the Congress government of India formed the Linguistic Provinces Committee [Dhar Committee] to look into the matter. The report of the Dhar Committee was agaist the formation of linguistic states. The government now set up a review committee under Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Pattabi Sita Ramayya [JVP].

During this time Potti Sreeramulu died after a fast unto death in favour of the formation of a state for the Telugu speaking people. The government was forced to form the state of Andra Pradesh.[1953]. The formation of Andra Pradesh gave an impetus to the people of other regions to agitate. As a result in 1953 the government appointed a state Re-organisation Commission under the chairmanship of Fazl Ali. Other members of the Commission were Hridaya Nath, Kunsuru and Sardar K.M.Panikker. On the basis of their report that Indian states Re-organisation Act was passed in 1956. The Indian Union was to have 14 states and 6 centrally administered territories. Later due to various reasons the Indian states were re-organized and at present there are 28 states. Uttarakhand, Jhakhand and Chattisgandh are the lastly formed states.
